How to Wash and Store Delicate Lingerie
A snagged lace edge or a crushed bra cup can change how a favorite piece looks and feels. Good lingerie care comes down to a few manageable habits: follow the care label, limit unnecessary friction, dry garments carefully, and give them enough space in storage. The right routine depends on the whole garment, including its elastic, padding, fastenings, and decorative details.
Start with the garment’s care label
Before washing, check the instructions for washing method, water temperature, bleaching, and drying. Two pieces that look similar may need different treatment because of their construction or fabric blend.
“Hand wash” deserves particular attention. The Drycleaning & Laundry Institute’s guidance on hand-washing labels explains that hand washing limits abrasion and that using a machine’s delicate cycle still departs from that instruction. A setting called “hand wash” does not automatically make machine washing suitable.
For garments marked “dry clean only,” follow that instruction rather than trying a home soak. If the label is missing or unreadable, look for the manufacturer’s care guidance before choosing a method.
Choose detergent for the actual fabric
Use a laundry detergent suitable for the fibers listed on the label. For silk or wool blends, check that the product specifically permits use on those materials; a general “delicates” description may not tell you enough.
Measure the detergent according to its instructions, including any separate dosage for hand washing. Adding extra can make rinsing harder. Use bleach, stain treatments, or fabric softener only when both the garment instructions and product directions allow them.
How to wash lingerie by hand
Hand washing gives you control over how much the garment moves and where you apply pressure. It can be particularly helpful for washable pieces with fine lace, delicate embroidery, or structured cups.
Set aside a clean basin and a clean towel, then work through these steps:
- Prepare the water. Use the temperature specified by the care label. Add the measured detergent and mix it into the water before putting in the garment.
- Wash gently. Submerge the piece and gently press water through the fabric. Keep any soaking within the garment and detergent instructions; avoid leaving delicate items soaking overnight.
- Give worn areas attention. Use your fingertips to gently work the fabric around underbands, straps, and underwear gussets. Avoid scrubbing lace, pulling seams, or crushing padded cups.
- Rinse as directed. For a detergent that requires rinsing, use fresh water and gently press it through the garment until the detergent is removed.
- Support the garment as you lift it. Hold the body of the piece rather than lifting a wet bra by one strap. Gently press out water without twisting or wringing.
Wash unfamiliar dark or brightly colored pieces separately at first. If dye enters the water, keep the garment away from lighter items while washing and drying.
For a stain, check that any treatment is suitable for the fabric and test it on a hidden area first. Persistent marks on a delicate or valuable piece are a reason to seek professional cleaning advice before trying stronger products.
When a laundry bag helps
For lingerie whose label permits machine washing, a mesh laundry bag can reduce tangling and contact with other garments. It is useful for small underwear, straps, and pieces with hooks that could catch on lace.
Fasten hooks and close zips before placing garments inside. Leave enough space for water to circulate; tightly packing several pieces into one bag makes washing less effective. Remove detachable accessories only where the garment instructions recommend it.
Choose the permitted cycle and temperature, and avoid washing delicate lingerie alongside heavy towels, jeans, or exposed fastenings. Where settings are adjustable, use a spin speed appropriate to the garment’s instructions.
A laundry bag cannot compensate for excessive heat or an unsuitable cycle. The care label still determines whether the garment belongs in the machine.
Check the machine as well as the programme name
For garments whose labels permit machine washing, look at the controls you can actually adjust: temperature, spin speed and load size. A programme called “delicate” can have different settings on different appliances, so read the machine instructions alongside the garment label.
If you are replacing an appliance, WaschZone's laundry equipment selection can help you compare the available models. Check the manufacturer's programme information rather than choosing from a product photograph alone. Easy-to-adjust settings are useful when your washing includes several fabrics with different care needs.
Fasten hooks, use a suitable laundry bag where appropriate and avoid overfilling the drum. Continue to hand wash any garment whose instructions require it; choosing a newer machine does not change the care requirements of the fabric.
Dry without stretching or crushing
Check drying instructions separately from washing instructions. For pieces that should air-dry, remove excess water before arranging them on a drying surface.
Lay unstructured garments on a clean towel and press gently. You can loosely roll the towel around suitable soft pieces, but keep molded bra cups in their natural shape rather than flattening them.
If flat drying is specified, use a clean surface or drying rack that supports the garment. Reshape cups and smooth straps gently while damp. Keep air-drying lingerie away from radiators and strong direct sunlight, and avoid suspending heavy, wet pieces by narrow straps.
Allow padding, seams, and elastic bands to dry completely before putting anything away. These thicker areas may still feel damp after the outer fabric seems dry.
Store lingerie with room to keep its shape
Delicate underwear care continues in the drawer. Choose a clean, dry space and avoid squeezing garments into an overflowing compartment.
Bras and structured pieces
Arrange molded bras so their cups retain their curves. Avoid turning one cup inside the other or placing heavy clothing on top. Fasten hooks to reduce snagging, and tuck straps loosely alongside the bra.
Soft bras and bralettes can usually be folded gently, provided their padding or decorative details are not compressed.
Underwear, slips, and lace garments
Fold underwear loosely and keep sharp accessories away from delicate fabrics. Smooth drawer dividers can help separate pieces without catching lace.
For travel, give structured cups space inside your luggage and keep lingerie away from shoe buckles and exposed zips. When you unpack, check for trapped moisture before returning garments to storage.
Keep washable underwear on an after-each-wear cleaning routine, and wash bras sooner when they become sweaty or soiled. A small basket for delicates, a laundry bag, and a clear drying space make the routine easier to maintain.
